Tablet sales to fall for third successive year as PC market stabilizes

Microsoft Surface 3

The iPad was once expected to render the PC practically extinct, with households and offices forecast to ditch their computers for portable touchscreens.

But sales of tablet computers are now set to fall sharply for their third consecutive year after
researchers said demand had peaked and that the technology had proved less popular than smartphones or home computers.

Deloitte forecasts that sales of tablet computers will drop to under 165m this year, down 10pc on last year and almost a third below 2014. Meanwhile, researchers at IDC believe the PC market will stabilise this year at 251.4m, a drop of just 1.7pc. plan to buy one in the next 12 months.

Sales of tablets rose rapidly just as those of PCs started to decline after Apple’s first iPad was released seven years ago, leading some pundits to suggest the world was entering a “Post-PC” era.

But sales flatlined and then fell as users switched to smartphones with bigger screens as well as holding on to older tablets for longer than expected.

Deloitte said that while iPads have proved popular among less computer-savvy users, younger consumers had opted for laptops.

With smartphones becoming larger and more powerful, and our research showing that millennials typically prefer laptops to tablets, it seems that the tablet may be getting harder to swallow for consumers,” said Paul Lee, head of TMT research at Deloitte.

“There are three consumer devices that are leading tablets by a large margin: TVs, smartphones, and computers. It seems unlikely that the tablet will ever displace these devices.”

Apple has seen iPad sales fall to their lowest level since 2011, although it is attempting to reboot the market with a range of devices aimed at professionals. The company is rumoured to be launching new iPads in the spring.

Apple iPad Pro is a great #BlackFriday buy

iPad Pro SmallWhen Apple launches a new product the tech world stops and collectively holds its breath to see what might be coming next.

The iPad Pro is no exception as its expansive 12.9-inch Retina display, doubled CPU performance of iPad Air 2 and refined Multi‑Touch technology have taken tablets to a new level.

Hardware and Design

With 5.6 million pixels, iPad Pro features the highest‑resolution Retina display of any iOS device. The 12.9‑inch screen makes editing 4K video, designing presentations, running a business — easier, faster and more engaging.

Despite the big display iPad Pro has an astonishingly slim and light design — just 6.9 mm thin and 713 g. Yet thanks to the strong unibody enclosure, it feels well‑balanced and sturdy. We like this!

Wi-Fi + LTE

This is a key part of any tablet these days and you probably wonder why we have looked at this before other features. the iPad Pro connects to fast Wi‑Fi and cellular networks, so you can download movies, browse the web and share documents from almost anywhere. Whether or not you’re in Wi‑Fi range, the superfast Wi‑Fi + Cellular model supports a range of LTE bands.

With four new high‑fidelity speakers built directly into its unibody, iPad Pro creates an audio experience as big as its display. The new design produces an engaging soundstage with three times the acoustic output of iPad Air.

A9X Chip

At the heart of iPad Pro lies the new A9X. It delivers up to 1.8 times the CPU performance and double the graphics performance of iPad Air 2. So even the most demanding apps run effortlessly.

iPad Pro comes with a variety of built‑in apps that make it easy to take on the essential things you do every day. And on the App Store, you’ll find incredible apps designed just for iPad, so there’s virtually no limit to what you can do.

Maybe tablet camera’s haven’t replaced digital SLR cameras yet but they are still getting better and better. The iSight camera on iPad Pro has an advanced sensor that lets you shoot beautiful images and video. The Apple-designed image signal processor gives you excellent results, whether you’re taking a panorama or using burst or timer modes. You can also shoot time‑lapse and slo‑mo video in 720p HD. And with a larger viewfinder, you’ll see more detail than ever before

The front‑facing FaceTime HD camera also has an improved sensor which, along with the larger display, makes video calls feel more lifelike. Even in low‑light or backlit settings, your pictures and videos will look great.

Cell Clinic Vancouver lets you trade-in devices this Christmas

To help families this Christmas, Cell Clinic is accepting trade-ins on broken/used mobile devices for cash at cellclinicnearly twice the value offered by major cell phone providers, and an extra 20 per cent to trade for in-store credit.

Gifts or cash will help families buy presents this Christmas. We are also encouraging people to use this offer to buy gifts and give directly to a charity of their choice such as YWCA Metro Vancouver, Greater Vancouver Food Bank, Salvation Army, Covenant House, Senior Services Society, BC SPCA, Vancouver Humane Society, Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre and Kocihta (helping Indigenous youth reach their career potential).

“We want to help charities and families that are in need,” said Alex Dechant, owner of Cell Clinic Ltd. “Many people don’t realize that old cell phones and tablets can be turned into cash or repaired Vs. purchasing a new one. Repairing a new mobile device can save consumers hundreds of dollars, reduce technology’s carbon footprint, and cut the need to buy a phone prior to the end of a cellular contract, or a long-term contract with a mobile provider”, said Dechant.

About Cell Clinic:

Cell Clinic provides people and corporations with a quick, affordable, and quality repair option in the heart of downtown Vancouver (935 Seymour) that will improve the functionality and life of their current cell phone and tablet. The store also offers gift certificates, refurbished mobile devices, and a variety of mobile accessories such as protection options, cases, Bluetooth speakers, headphones, chargers, etc.

Dell Venue 8 Pro review

Venue 8 ProStepping out of the iOS/Android world again, I’m impressed with all that Dell has to offer. The Venue 8 Pro provides yet another option for people looking for an 8 inch tablet. I’ve used the iPad Mini and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and have reviewed Lenovo’s Idea Tab as well so this tablet is a welcome change.

It’s hard to say that this tablet is better or worse than an Apple or Samsung product because it’s just different. I’ll admit I haven’t used Windows since XP and there is enough new things to learn with Windows 8 as the Venue 8 Pro’s OS. The 8 inch tablet space is an interesting one too because every major player has one these days with Samsung offering up its Galaxy line in so many forms. Bigger than a smartphone but smaller than full size iPad or a laptop, 8 inch tablet’s can bridge the gap between smartphones and laptops and the Venue 8 Pro does this very well.

On the hardware side the Venue 8 Pro offers the following:

  • Intel® Atom™ processor Z3740D with 32GB storage (2MB Cache, up to 1.8GHz Quad-Core)
  • Windows 8.1 (32Bit) English
  • Microsoft® Office Home and Student 2013 Included
  • 8.0 inch IPS Display with HD (WXGA 1280 x 800) resolution with 10-pt capacitive touch
  • 2GB Single Channel DDR3L-RS 1600MHz
  • 32GB eMMC
  • Intel® HD Graphics
  • Dell Wireless 1538 Dual-Band 2×2 802.11n WiFi + Bluetooth® Smart

I love the separate keyboard that ships with the Venue 8 Pro. You can type via the touchscreen but I prefer this little keyboard because it’s small and compact and runs using Bluetooth 4.0.  This will also allow for connection to a compatible mouse, external keyboard or other accessories or sync up some compatible Bluetooth speakers for great sound without the wires.

Dual-band WiFi is also a nice feature of the Venue 8 Pro. It allows you to set up fast, reliable connections to WiFi hotspots around town, on campus or at home. I am not sure if this tablet is cellular network capable like its Samsung and Apple cousins but that is worth investigating.

User Experience

As I mentioned above, Windows 8 is a totally new beast for me. I found myself looking for the Start Menu and the desktop more than anything to get my bearings. From Windows 95 to XP and Server editions of NT and 2000 between, Windows was my go to OS. Switching to Mac wasn’t an easy one at first but going back has been tougher. I tried to get as much use out of this tablet as I could from surfing the web, downloading apps, using Office but I was so lost at some points I could only laugh.

For savvy business professional who still uses Windows and always has you will love this tablet. Compact and easy to carry around and great to take traveling, the Venue 8 Pro will go 9.9 hours before it needs charging. That’s three hours more video watch time on a single charge versus other popular small screen tablets including the  Nexus 77, ARM based 8” Samsung Galaxy Tab 35, Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.

Getac, a leading manufacturer of rugged computers, is introducing the T800 rugged tablet. At less than 9 x 6 inches in size and boasting a brilliant 8.1-inch display, the T800 is the ideal compact rugged tablet for today’s mobile workforce.

Combining the latest in processor and wireless technology with an ultra-rugged exterior and Getac’s unique SnapBack add-on accessories, the Getac T800 is the perfect fit for use in extreme working environments including those found in the utilities, military, field service, public safety and transportation sectors. The new T800 runs Windows 8.1 Pro.Getac Tablet

T800 incorporates the most advanced computing technology that will enable seamless and reliable data communication and transmission, field data collection and secure identification recognition feature.

8.1 inch Display

The T800 rugged tablet features an 8.1-inch sunlight-readable display — 34 percent larger screen area than other 7-inch tablets — for everyone who needs the larger screen size.

Thin and Light

From the start, the T800 was engineered as a compact rugged tablet to be both thin and light. The new tablet is only 2.4cm thick, less than 22.7cm x 15.1cm in length and width, weighs just 880g, and it is designed to easily fit in one hand.

SnapBack Add-ons

Unique to the T800 is Getac’s SnapBack add-ons. Created as an extension to the T800, the SnapBack add-ons make it quick and easy to add an extended battery or 2-in-1 SmartCard reader and RFID reader module. And they easily snap right on and off — no tools necessary.

LumiBond(TM) Display Technology

The T800 uses Getac’s revolutionary LumiBond technology to achieve a display that is more readable especially under sunlight, offers better contrast, and gives crisper colours than any other rugged tablet display does. By bonding the display glass with the touch panel and LCD, Getac created a single pane that is more durable and improves readability.

Flexible I/O interfaces

T800 provides extensive I/O ports options to satisfy the job needs of professionals in the field, including optional RS232, LAN, Micro SD, and one-dimensional / two-dimensional bar code reader, allowing tasks to be handled and completed impeccably anywhere, any time.

Quad-Core Performance

Inside the T800, Getac packed an incredible amount of power and advanced technology. Built with the Intel(R) Quad-core(TM) Bay Trail M N3530 2.16 GHz processor, the T800 can remain running at near full speed when other tablets processors would throttle back performance to avoid overheating.

Lasting Power

The T800 rugged tablet boasts up to 8 hours of battery life on a single charge. Additionally, you can have 8 hours SnapBack battery add-ons at the ready for potentially infinite, uninterrupted battery life. This allows you to keep working without ever shutting down your apps or the Windows OS.

Tri-Pass-Through WiFi & GPS

Getac packed the new T800 rugged tablet with the latest technologies. It incorporates the latest 802.11ac WiFi for data-transfer speeds up to three times faster than 802.11n products have. In-house developed 8-band, 3D antenna technology boosts more reliable wireless reception and broader coverage. The T800’s dedicated GPS also offers two times the search capacity, faster location positioning and improved accuracy over competitors’ embedded GPS designs. For vehicle deployments, the T800 can be configured with pass-through antenna ports allowing you to simultaneously connect high-gain GPS, WWAN and WLAN roof-mounted antennae.

The new T800 rugged tablet was built to survive. In fact, the T800 was engineered to survive 6 feet drops, shocks, spills, vibration, dust, liquid and more. The T800 has been independently tested and certified to MIL-STD 810G and IP65, and ANSI certified Sku is also available for users operating in explosive dangerous environments.
