Big Data Can Help Save Our Planet

Big data analytics company and ETH Zurich spin-off Teralytics, Telefónica NEXT and sustainability solution provider South Pole Group conducted a study in Nuremberg, Germany that reveals the analysis of mobile network data as an effective way to estimate CO2 and NOX emissions in urban areas at very low cost. To achieve this, Teralytics examined aggregated and anonymised data, which is generated when mobile devices communicate with Telefónica’s mobile communication cells while users make calls, send texts or browse the internet. Teralytics was able to refine this raw data into human mobility patterns to understand how the different modes of transport, for instance trains or cars, are frequented. Combining this information with data on the emissions of the different transport modes, the three entities were able to estimate air pollution and GHG emissions in the city.

New study leverages mobile network data to estimate levels of carbon emissions and air pollution in cities, an approach that could substantially reduce the cost of implementing the Paris Agreement.

As each form of transportation produces a unique amount of CO2 and NOX emissions, understanding urban mobility patterns is vital to understand the source of emissions. The study in Nuremberg used this information to estimate with up to 77 per cent accuracy the concentration of air pollutants in the city. These findings encourage further exploration of how big data can be used to understand and ultimately solve environmental issues such as air pollution in cities across the world. This is particularly interesting with regards to the lower cost of analysing and interpreting data compared to the higher cost of production and maintenance of elaborate measuring stations. The novel approach could thus allow an ongoing analysis on a nationwide scale.

“While our contemporary urban lifestyles result in the generation of harmful greenhouse gasses, it also generates large amounts of behavioural data. Our mission at Teralytics is to use this data for the benefit of society,” says Georg Polzer, CEO of Teralytics. “Our findings from Nuremberg showed that this data can be used to give city planners insights into how human mobility contributes to pollution. This is a vital part to efficiently design and implement clean air and low carbon strategies. We are looking forward to further exploring this opportunity.”

Using a three-level process, the fully anonymised and aggregated data was first transformed into movement flows by the data scientists at Teralytics, identifying over 1.2 million transportation routes during the analysed time period, as depicted in Figure 2. The sustainability solution expert South Pole Group then used an atmospheric model to estimate air pollution levels caused by the usage of the different modes of transportation, taking into account meteorological data and information on the respective traffic carriers’ emission levels from the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUB). In the third step, the accuracy of the method was examined by comparing the findings with existing data from air pollution measuring stations. The values measured at these stations were found to correlate up to 77 per cent with those from the Teralytics’ calculations (see Figure 3).

Figure 3: Correlation between measured NOx concentrations and NOx concentration calculated by Teralytics. This approach shows high correlations between values, in some cases up to 77 per cent.

The results of this pilot study in Nuremberg constitute a sound basis to further develop the methodology. Following its success, the consortium was able to secure financial support from Climate KIC’s Low Carbon City Lab (LoCaL), an initiative that brings together cities, business, academia and NGO’s to deliver high environmental and societal impact. With this backing, the research partnership will expand and improve the methodology, focusing on short travel routes and taking into account local emission factors like airports, large-scale events, and types of vehicles on the road (i.e. electric cars and SUVs). Moreover, the influence of factors such as traffic jams and red lights will be taken into account in order to make even more accurate estimations of the air pollution levels in a city.

“The results from this pilot study exceed our expectations,” says Maximilian Groth, responsible for Business Development & Partnerships at Teralytics. “We are confident that we will soon be able to scale this product to cities worldwide to support urban planners in making our air cleaner and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement at the lowest possible cost.”

This research follows other successful studies on usage of mobile network data, including a smart data analysis for transport in Stuttgart by Teralytics, Telefónica Germany, and Fraunhofer IAO.

Additional comments on the topic:

“Approximately 70 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions are generated in cities, meaning that they play a key role in climate protection. We see great potential in the use of continuously generated data, such as mobile network data, to measure and reduce pollution levels in cities.” States Renat Heuberger, CEO of South Pole Group.

Florian Marquart, Managing Director of Telefónica NEXT for Advanced Data Analytics: “The pilot project in Nuremberg has clearly shown the specific added value of anonymised mobile network data for the environment. This is data from people for people. We see great potential in the results and will start the next phase of our research. The goal is to develop a product that German cities, German states and the German federal government can use to better face the challenges of emissions pollution”.

Keep your data in Canada with AWS and Cologix

Creating hybrid cloud deployments with the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud just got more compelling for customers interested in connecting to AWS’s new Canada (Central) Region. Cologix, a network neutral interconnection and data centre company, announced today the immediate availability of AWS Direct Connect cloud service in its Montreal data centres. As an AWS Direct Connect Partner, Cologix can offer customers secure and private connections to the AWS Cloud to improve performance and reduce costs compared to onramps via the public Internet.

This deployment with Cologix represents one of the first AWS Direct Connect locations in Montreal and will reside at Cologix’s flagship interconnection hub data centre at 1250 Rene Levesque, where more than 90 network service providers are available in the Meet-Me-Room. In addition to customers at 1250 Rene Leveque, customers across Cologix’s six other Montreal data centres will have access to the Direct Connect service via Cologix’s Metro Connect solution. Cologix also offers its New Jersey and Dallas data center customers network connectivity to AWS Direct Connect locations in the US East (Virginia) Region.

“The AWS Direct Connect node in Montreal represents a huge win for Canadian cloud customers interested in data sovereignty,,” notes Grant van Rooyen, president and CEO, Cologix. “We look forward to delivering in-market, low latency, highly secure connections to AWS that are easy to deploy.”

In an environment where choice offers the ability to evolve with dynamic market forces, Cologix’s Cloud Connect Platform provides more on-ramp solutions to public clouds, more physical connections to best-in-breed cloud service providers and access to more independent Internet exchanges than any other provider across its footprint.

LG’s mass-tier smartphone offerings for 2017 to be unveiled at #CES

LG Electronics (LG) will unveil four new mass-tier K Series smartphones and a new Stylus 3 at CES® 2017 in Las Vegas, as the mid-range segment continues its strong growth as the market matures. The new mid-range devices are designed to bring popular, best-in-class technologies from LG’s more premium flagship smartphones, such as the 120-degree wide angle front camera lens and the rear fingerprint scanner.

LG’s updated K Series carries over the original philosophy that all customers do not want the same things in a smartphone. Rather than offering one main smartphone model and expecting customers to adapt, the K Series was designed with the diverse needs of consumers in mind.

The K10 delivers a best-in-class 5.3-inch HD In-cell Touch Display that delivers a superb viewing lg-k10smallexperience indoors or out. Its 5MP front camera with 120-degree wide angle selfie lens complements a premium, 13MP rear camera that has been employed in LG flagship G series devices. Other advanced features not usually available in smartphones in this category include a fingerprint scanner, a metallic U-frame for a sturdy but slim 7.9mm profile and 2.5D Arc Glass design.

The K8 features a 5-inch HD In-cell Touch display and delivers high-quality camera performance with 5MP in the front and 13M on the rear enhanced by LG’s intelligent UX features such as Auto Shot and Gesture Shot for selfies. Auto Shot automatically triggers the front camera’s shutter when a face is detected. Gesture Shot takes a selfie in response to a hand signal, eliminating the need to press the shutter button and shaking the phone at the most critical moment.

The K4 is equipped with a sensitive 5-inch In-cell Touch display, 5MP front and rear cameras as well as the popular Auto Shot and Gesture Shot features found in the K8. The attractive K4 offers a slim 7.9mm profile and removable 2,500mAh battery as well as a microSD slot for additional storage.

The smallest in the series, the K3 comes with a 4.5-inch On-cell Touch display, a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP lens in the front supported by Gesture Shot. With a microSD slot and 2,100mAh removable battery, the K3 offers many features unavailable on other competing smartphones in this category.

LG will also debut the third generation Stylus 3, the latest version of its mid-range Stylus smartphone (Stylo in the United States). The Stylus 3 delivers an improved writing experience with a 1.8mm diameter fiber-tip stylus to provide the feel and feedback of an actual pen when writing on the screen. The Stylus 3 also features a fingerprint scanner and enhanced UX with Pen Pop 2.0 as well as the popular Pen Keeper and Screen-off Memo. With Pen Pop 2.0, your memos are never out of sight and can be set to display on the screen whenever the stylus is removed. Pen Keeper displays a warning when the stylus strays too far from the phone, and Screen-off Memo enables note-taking directly on the screen even when the display is off.

“Our 2017 mass-tier, mid-range smartphones focus on giving our customers a wide variety of options and choices for their smartphone lifestyles,” said Juno Cho, president of the LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “What’s consistent in all our K Series and Stylus 3 devices is that they look and feel premium, offer replaceable batteries and all come with expandable memory slots, what customers consider key factors when buying smartphones in this category.”

Introduction to the Microsoft Bot Framework #cognitive #office365 #sms #sdk

Build and connect intelligent bots to interact with your users naturally wherever they are, from text/sms to Skype, Slack, Office 365 mail and other popular services.

One of the key problems in human-computer interactions is the ability of the computer to understand what a person wants, and to find the pieces of information that are relevant to their intent. For example, in a news-browsing app, you might say “Get news about virtual reality companies,” in which case there is the intention to FindNews, and “virtual reality companies” is the topic. LUIS is designed to enable you to very quickly deploy an http endpoint that will take the sentences you send it, and interpret them in terms of the intention they convey, and the key entities like “virtual reality companies” that are present. LUIS lets you custom design the set of intentions and entities that are relevant to the application, and then guides you through the process of building a language understanding system. According to Microsoft documentation for their Bot Framework,

“Microsoft’s Language Understanding Intelligent Service (LUIS) offers a fast and effective way of adding language understanding to applications. With LUIS, you can use pre-existing, world-class, pre-built models from Bing and Cortana whenever they suit your purposes – and when you need specialized models, LUIS guides you through the process of quickly building them.

Bot Builder lets you use LUIS to add natural language understanding to your bot via the LuisDialog class. You can add an instance of a LuisDialog that references your published language model and then add intent handlers to take actions in response to users utterances. To see LUIS in action watch the 10 minute tutorial.”

The Bot Builder SDK Chat Reference Library is here.

“Being first to market with a router app for managing and monitoring a home network, we wanted to continue to advance the software for a more intuitive approach to make it easier to use and find tools that will make managing and sharing a home network easier,” said Dan Albertson, Linksys senior product manager. “What separates good routers from great routers is the software. The Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app clearly differentiates its home router solutions by providing all the basic and advanced management and control features but also continues to add new features that leverage the intelligence of the home router.”

The app has been completely updated and redesigned, providing simple utility, such as looking up and sharing the wireless credentials for up to 50 guests with a few taps on a mobile device. The app will also enable users to change bandwidth prioritization quickly and easily on the fly, ensuring your bandwidth-sensitive video calls and gaming sessions never slow down.

In addition to dozens of new icons to assign to clients’ devices, the app shows how much hard drive space has been used and how much is still available on external hard drives connected to the router.

Parental Controls

Parents can block websites or shut off Wi-Fi entirely for individual devices. Parents can also set up a schedule for blocking access for each device (available in an app update coming later this year). These parental control features will aid in making sure children use the internet appropriately, providing parents with peace of mind that there is also an ample amount of homework time without the distraction of the internet.

Notifications

A home network is dynamic, and notifications can alert users and provide insight on changing conditions. The new router offline notification feature (initially supported with the Linksys EA9500 router) is the first notification feature available that will detect when the router has lost its connection to the internet for any reason, and alert users with a notification on a mobile device. This feature is useful when users are away from home and could be an early warning system for:
· Phone calls from upset household Internet users that the router went offline and there could be a potential issue with the internet connection.
· Ensuring access to critical wireless devices remotely, such as door locks, IP cameras and smart thermostats
· A potential problem with the users’ internet provider

HummingBad Android malware controls tens of millions of devices and generates $300,000 a month #smartphone #security #mobile #privacy

Google’s Android operating system has some pretty serious security issues as of late. The HummingBad malware essentially roots your Android smartphone device.

The malware establishes a persistent rootkit on Android devices, generates fraudulent ad revenue, and installs additional fraudulent apps. HummingBad installs more than 50,000 fraudulent apps per day and displays more than 20 million advertisements per day.

According to a research report from Check Point Software Technologies, “the HummingBad campaign runs alongside a legitimate advertising analytics business, sharing their technology and resources, enabling it to control tens of millions of Android devices [and] generate $300,000 a month.”Remove Android Malware HummingBad

Google pushes out monthly security updates to the Android operating system however phone carriers and manufacturers haven’t held up their end of the bargain with timely update roll outs. According to a Bloomberg Technology report, “the most challenging discussions are with carriers, which can be slow to approve updates because they test them thoroughly to avoid network disruption. Verizon Communications Inc.’s tests can take months, according to a former employee of the largest U.S. wireless provider. It has shaved a few weeks off at the behest of Google and customers, the person said. Shortening it further is difficult because Verizon supports so many different Android phones, which must be tested before updates go live, the person added.”

How to remove Android malware

Most people won’t be able to determine if their phone has been compromised. So how do I know if my phone has been rooted, you may ask. Vancouver Gadgets would recommend downloading and scanning their smartphones with  Lookout Security and Antivirus.

Note that general consumers will be most likely to be affected by the issue since many businesses use mobile device management (MDM) software to lock down smartphone settings. If you have a corporate managed device please check with your IT department before downloading and installing any application from the Google Play Store.

To be safe from future malware issues be sure that app installations outside of Google Play are not allowed on your device by following these steps:

  • Scroll down from top of phone
  • Click the Settings “cog”
  • Scroll down and click Security
  • Find “Unknown Sources” and make sure the option to Allow installation of applications from both trusted and unknown sources is NOT checked. If you have a corporate managed device you may find this option is grayed out or unavailable.

It is believed the organization behind the malware is based in China at Yingmob, a Chinese mobile ad server company. As reported by Motherboard, “… based in Beijing’s Chaoyang District, Yingmob, a subsidiary of MIG Unmobi Technology Inc., markets itself like any other advertising firm. Its professional-looking website claims its easy-to-deploy ads support text, pictures, and video, and don’t affect the user experience. It offers pop-up, sidebar, and in-app adverts.”

Moto Z Mods: Transform Your #smartphone #tech #mobile #android #innovation

Motorola Moto Z

From the mid 1990s to the mid 2000s there was meaningful and frequent innovation in wireless. Motorola saw the creation of the first flip phone, the Moto RAZR, the first QWERTY smartphone, the first app ecosystem, and of course, the first touchscreen phone.

But, since then, innovation has stagnated and is often incremental at best. Small changes in display size or megapixels make headlines, yet marginally impact overall experience to the point that new smartphones have become predictable.

Moto Z: The world’s thinnest premium smartphone

Made from military aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel, the stunning new Moto Z is durable-yet-razor thin – just 5.2mm – and ultra-light with a 5.5” Quad HD AMOLED display. It’s also incredibly powerful packing a Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM 820 processor, 4GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage inside. You can get more space for pictures, videos and apps by adding a microSD card up to 2 TB.

Moto Z has a high-resolution 13MP camera with optical image stabilization and laser autofocus, which help you take beautiful, true-to-life pictures in any light. The front-facing 5MP camera includes a wide-angle lens, which is great for fitting friends in the picture. And, with an extra flash on the front, everybody in the group looks their best—even in low light.

A water-repellant coating means rain, splashes or spills won’t get in your way. Tired of fumbling your phone to switch on and sign in? With the fingerprint reader, a touch is all you need to instantly wake up your phone. And with up to 30 hours of battery you can go all day and well into the night without needing to stop and recharge. You’ll get up to 8 hours of power in just 15 minutes with TurboPower.

Moto Mods: In a snap everything changes

With Moto Mods, you now have the ability to transform your Moto Z into exactly what you need it to be. Like an instant party maker with the JBL® SoundBoost. Or, grab some popcorn and turn your phone into a 70-inch movie projector with the Moto Insta-Share Projector. The Power Pack instantly adds up to 22 hours of life to your phone2 — and it comes in fashionable designs from partners like kate spade new york, TUMI and Incipio. You can also match your phone to your own personal style as often as you want with Style Shells. Choose from premium materials like real wood and leather, or pick out a patterned fabric. You can swap them whenever you like.

High-powered magnets connect Moto Mods to your phone so you can easily snap them together as your needs change. And since function never goes out of style, rest assured that the Moto Mods developed today are designed to work with future generations of Moto Z phones.

ZTE Launches Flagship AXON 7 #android #smartphone #mobile #tech

ZTE AXON 7 smartphone

ZTE, a leading global mobile device maker, officially unveiled its latest flagship device, the AXON 7. The device will first be launched in China, with international launches including the United States, Canada, Europe, and other regions to follow shortly after.

The AXON 7 was designed with an emphasis on what matters most to users today: immersive theatre-like sound, eye-catching design, and a high quality camera, all in the palm of one’s hand.

//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Design Inspired by Luxury Cars

ZTE partnered with Designworks, a subsidiary of BMW Group, to design a device that offers a fusion of aesthetics and functionality. Designworks helped create a smartphone that both looks good, with a full metal unibody and rounded corners and edges, and is easy to use. For example, the intuitive fingerprint sensor simply requires users to tap an index finger on the back of the phone where their finger naturally grips it, making it easy to use with one hand and minimizing the risk of dropping the device.

Power of Sound from Within

ZTE knows the importance of high quality audio on today’s smartphones, so they worked with a team of music conservatory professors to ensure the AXON 7 provides the ultimate audio experience. The device features Hi-Fi sound from two dedicated AKM audio chips and Dolby Atmos technology driving dual front-facing speakers. This results in clear, resonating vocals during calls and even better sounding music.

High Quality Camera for Better Photos

A smartphone with the ability to take high quality photographs is one of the key features that users are asking for. AXON 7 fulfils that need with fast and accurate photography while reducing visual noise that normally impedes photos taken from a smartphone. Its 20-megapixel rear camera uses dual image stabilization technology, advanced auto focus, exposure, scene selection and white balance to automatically detect ambient light changes. AXON 7 makes it easy to take great photos with less effort.

Availability

The AXON 7 comes in two versions: standard and premium. Both versions are available in two colours: Ion Gold and Quartz Gray. It will be available unlocked and online in Canada with pricing and availability dates coming soon.

Android device performance lags behind iOS #smartphones #tablets #technology #pr

Samsung S6 smartphone

Android devices are no match for their iOS counterparts when it comes to device performance, according to the Q1 2016 State of Mobile Device Performance and Health report released today by Blancco Technology Group. Based on diagnostics tests run on millions of iOS and Android devices via the SmartChk platform, the report reveals a glaring disparity in failure rates for Android devices (44 percent) and iOS devices (25 percent) during the first quarter of 2016. What’s more – out of the 44 percent of Android devices that failed, the Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Lenovo K3 Note models had the highest failure rates.

These findings come off the heels of Kantar Worldpanel ComTech’s latest smartphone market share report, which shows that Android commanded the lion’s share of the mobile operating system (OS) market share for the three-month period ending February 29, 2016. In particular, Android saw considerable sales growth in various parts of the world, including the United States, Europe, China, Japan and Australia – leaving iOS, Windows and other operating systems in its dust.

“Android devices seem to be a contradiction in terms,” said Pat Clawson, CEO, Blancco Technology Group. “On the one hand, Android is the number one operating system in terms of global market share. But despite this advantage, Android device performance still lags behind iOS and tends to be plagued by high rates of crashing apps and app cache. With the launch of new smartphone models this year – such as Samsung S7, LG G5 and the rumored iPhone 7 – it will be interesting to see how Android device performance stacks up against iOS in the coming months.”

Key highlights from the Q1 2016 trend report include:

  • Out of the 25 percent of iOS devices that failed, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 5s models had the highest failure rates – at 25 percent and 17 percent, respectively.
  • While dual SIM emerged as a common source of performance issues in Europe and Asia, it was not prevalent in North America.
  • Crashing apps were detected on 74 percent of Android devices, while open/cached apps were found on 44 percent of Android devices.
  • A significant portion of the top 10 Android crashing apps in Q1 2016 were security-related, including Lookout, 360 Security, CM Security and AVG AntiVirus.
  • Device failure rates were significantly higher in Asia (55 percent) than in North America (27 percent) andEurope (35 percent).
  • ‘No Trouble Found’ returns were highest in North America (73 percent), whereas they were far lower inAsia (45 percent) and Europe (65 percent).

Clawson concluded, “Our data’s value goes far beyond providing a glimpse into device performance issues and trends. By using our analytics dashboard and business intelligence, mobile network operators and OEMs can actually see real improvements to their business, such as a more efficient post-sales customer experience, increased foot traffic, upsell opportunities, fewer NTF returns and reduced customer churn. For enterprise businesses, our data can help get C-level buy in to implement diagnostics tools as a way to cut down on unnecessary IT/support desk workloads, manpower and costs.”

Zus – the smart car charger @nondainc #cool #tech for #cars #acura #honda #gm #ford #toyota #subaru #audi #mazda #nissan

Zus is a device for charging your smartphone quickly on the go. The vendor tagline calls it “the smart car charger” because it can be connected to your smartphone via an app which can be used to locate your vehicle using GPS technology. I’ve used the device and found the vendor’s claims hold true – the device and app do work in tandem to record your vehicle’s location. And the charging technology worked as claimed – my iPhone 6 charged in about 3.5 hours, which is much faster than other car chargers I’ve tried.

Where the GPS location technology would really come in handy is if you’re a travelling consultant or sales-person and frequently have to leave your vehicle for work related reasons. I could see this working particularly well if you’re in an unfamiliar or foreign city as a mobile worker. Another scenario where the location technology might assist is at a large sporting event, for example when you need to leave your vehicle in an enormous parking lot.

There’s an app for both Apple iOS and Android platforms. Additionally, the device is made from military grade materials and will continue to work well even on the hottest summer days when the interior of your vehicle gets extremely hot. The vendor claims the device will work up to 100 degrees Celsius –  however I haven’t had the chance to test that out here in Metro Vancouver this winter. The temperature hasn’t gone much above 10 degrees Celsius over the past few months.

If you’ve bought a Zus please let me know how its worked out for you and leave a comment below.

I would really appreciate it if you could like and share this post on the social networks so I can get the word out about my blog!

Thanks – Jay

LG’s First Modular Type Smartphone: LG G5

LG G5 smartphone

LG Electronics (LG) today unveiled its highly anticipated LG G5 smartphone, a brand new design with a sleek, metal uni-body featuring a Slide out Battery and a Modular Type design that gives a greater smartphone experience. Complete with LG Friends, a collection of companion devices, the G5 can be transformed into a digital camera, Hi-Fi player and more.

Encased in a sleek all metal aluminum body and Slide-out Battery to easily swap out a depleted battery for a fully charged one in seconds, the LG G5 surpasses the visual experience of its predecessor, the LG G4.

First, the G5’s 135-degree wide angle lens lets you choose between a standard or wide angle lens to get more in the shot. Second, the Always-on Display makes notifications just a glance away with the time, date and more available anytime without waking the G5. Third, the 3D Arc Glass featured in the smartphone’s 5.3-inch display creates a gentle curve and a smooth colourful metal surface through an advanced microdizing process which takes anodized aluminum to a whole new level.

Furthermore, the insulated antenna is invisibly integrated into the body without disrupting the seamless look of the metal uni-body. LG designers took the metal body concept one step further by adding a Shiny Cut edge for added contrast and a more comfortable grip.

LG’s First Modular Type Smartphone

LG’s innovative Modular Type design gives the LG G5 the ability to transform into a digital camera, Hi-Fi player and more all while keeping its traditional removable battery in a full metal uni-body design for the first time ever.

LG CAM Plus

The LG CAM Plus is a versatile camera module that can be attached through the battery slot to deliver the comfortable grip and convenient control of a standalone camera. The LG CAM Plus provides physical buttons for power, shutter, record, zoom, LED indicator. It also offers intuitive autofocus and exposure lock, features usually found on standalone digital cameras. When attached to the LG G5, it provides an additional battery capacity of 1,200mAh to allow for longer shooting times for more fun and enjoyment.

LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY

The LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY is an innovative portable Hi-Fi DAC audio player developed in collaboration with B&O PLAY to meet the needs of those who seek to enjoy top-notch sounds that have traditionally only beenavailable through high-end audio devices. LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY stands out for its simple yet elegant Scandinavian design as well as premium sound technology. In addition to the 32-bit Hi-Fi DAC up-sampling technology first introduced on the LG V10, LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY also supports 32-bit, 384 KHz high-definition audio playback. LG Hi-Fi Plus with B&O PLAY can be used either as a module with the LG G5 or as a separate Hi-Fi DAC by connecting to any smartphone or PC.

Extreme Wide Angle Lens and Advanced UX

Reflecting LG’s longstanding reputation as a leader in smartphone cameras, the LG G5 has two cameras on the rear: one with a standard 78-degree lens and another with a 135-degree wide angle lens, the widest available in anysmartphone. The 135-degree lens on the LG G5 offers a viewing angle that is approximately 1.7 times wider than those of existing smartphone cameras and 15 degrees wider than the human eye’s field of view. The wide anglelens makes it easier for users to capture more landscape, taller buildings or larger groups without having to position oneself further from the subject.

The LG G5 features a collection of powerful photo effects including Pop-out Picture, Film Effect and Auto Shot. Pop-out Picture combines images taken by the standard and wide angle lens to create a picture-in-a-frame effect. Film Effect can apply nine different film emulators to an image while Auto Shot is an enhanced camera UX which automatically captures the perfect selfie shot when a face is recognized.

Always-on Display for Enhanced Convenience

The 5.3-inch Quad HD IPS Quantum display on the LG G5 offers an Always-on feature, the first on a main smartphone display. The concept of the Always-on Display was first introduced in the LG V10 as the Second Screen and now that feature has evolved on to the main display to show the time and date continuously even when the G5 is in sleep mode. This means that you can always see the time at a glance, even during important meetings or when your hands are full.

To minimize power consumption, LG redesigned the display driver IC memory and power management function so that the display’s backlight only illuminates one small part of the overall display. Thanks to this technology, theAlways-on Display requires only 0.8 per cent of the battery’s full capacity per hour to operate. With consumers turning on their smartphones up to 150 times a day mostly to just check the time, the G5’s Always-on Display will make a notable difference in the life of the battery over the course of the day.

Another advanced display feature in the LG G5 is Daylight Mode, which gives the G5 exceptional outdoor visibility beyond that of current auto brightness technology. Daylight Mode detects surrounding light conditions and instantaneously increases or decreases the brightness of the display, up to 850 nits. Even before your eyes have adjusted to the different lighting conditions, the G5 will be ready.

Thanks to the partnership with Google, images taken with the 360 CAM can be uploaded to Street View and YouTube360, adding the fun of sharing creative content with others. The images will also be available to view on the LG 360 VR or other smartphones or devices that are capable of 360-degree content.
