Vint Cerf, of the original Internet Pioneers, thinks that the current digital age we’re living in could become a forgotten era. A post on Hacked explains that, “Cerf’s concerns lay in the rapid progression of technology. File formats that were common just a decade ago have become deprecated in favor of newer, more efficient formats. Civilizations like Rome used tablets and carvings to document their civilization, and these have withstood the ages.”
The article speaks of the proprietary nature of much of the software and file formats we use in this current age and how it relates to old technologies becoming deprecated. It also suggests some solutions to ultra long file storage such as with encoding data onto DNA.
Hurry, time to delete all those drunk tweets and status updates before they become encoded in DNA for all eternity!
